Dutch Driving License
We will be talking about how to get a Dutch driving license in this post as a citizen of the Netherlands or as an immigrant. Getting your driving license in the Netherlands is an easy process that will take about 5 days from the day you apply for it. However, while this process is very simple and straightforward for the citizens, that’s not the case with the immigrants. The process is the same but is different as there is some documentation needed for the process.
Immigrants Getting the Dutch Driving License
You must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible to apply for a driving license in the Netherlands. Once you pass the theory and practical driving exams, you will have to present the following documents;
- Your Dutch residence permit
- Medical certificate
- Your Theory and Practical certificates to prove the exam was cleared.
The driving license is only gotten from the city’s municipal office, known as the “Gemeente” in Dutch. If you’re in the Netherlands and you don’t meet the criteria to get a driving license, we are here to help you.
Exchanging Foreign License to Dutch Driving License
You can exchange your foreign driving license for a Dutch driving license if you meet the following criteria:
- If you’re a Netherlands permanent resident and have your residence permit.
- You’re from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, or you’re from a country with a special driving license agreement.
- Even if you’re a non EU/EEA citizen, your foreign driving license should be valid at the time of your application.
- If your foreign license is expired, at least have a declaration from your license issuer stating that they have no objection to you having a Dutch driving license.
