To complete this process legally, you must first determine whether the country and your country of origin allows dual citizenship. While some countries allow for dual citizenship, others require you to renounce your current citizenship in order to obtain the new one. Dual nationality can be obtained by special government processes such as naturalization, childbirth, and so on. However, each country has various legislation, which makes the process unique.

People would want to change their nationality or hold dual citizenship for numerous reasons. Whatever the cause, we are here to give you valuable answers to your questions.

Advantages of dual citizenship

Disadvantages of dual citizenship

  • Political Rights

This is important for people with political interest. With double nationality, you can partake in the political activities of the countries you have citizenship in. You will have the right to legally vote, fund political parties of stand for election.

  • Social Benefits: Having double nationality gives you the priority to enjoy the social benefits of the countries. You will have access to the free or low cost medical and educational facilities available for citizens of that country.
  • Own Properties: In countries where land ownership is limited to citizens only, dual citizens will be eligible to buy land and other properties as they are lawful citizens of those countries.
  • Travel and Work: A normal person would need a visa and a work permit to travel and work in another country. However, dual citizens do not require a visa to travel back home or a work permit to work in the country that they have citizenship in.

  • Double Tax:  You are required to pay tax for both countries where to have citizenship. This is somewhat disadvantageous if you have businesses in both countries requiring you to pay taxes.
  • Double Obligations: You must obey the laws of both countries to which you are a citizen. If you are a dual citizen of the United States and a country that requires its inhabitants to serve in the armed forces, you may be stripped of your American citizenship if you take an officer position in a foreign military fighting against the United States.
It is vital to investigate each issue thoroughly, but in general, U.S. policy acknowledges that dual citizens may be legally compelled to fulfill military responsibilities abroad, and many can do so without losing their U.S. citizen status.

Ways to get Dual Citizenship

There are a couple of ways to get dual citizenship, depending on the country.

1. Citizenship by origin

You can obtain citizenship by origin if your parents or grandparents come from a country that has blood laws. This means that the nationality of the child is the same as that of the parent, regardless of the place of birth.  This is only possible if you’re able to provide valid proof of this relationship.

2. Citizenship by Naturalization

Citizenship by naturalization is another simple way to get dual nationality. With this method, you have to stay in that country for a long time before being eligible to apply for their citizenship. The conditions vary depending on the laws of that country. For example, to be eligible to naturalize US, you must be a green card for at least 5 years before you can apply for citizenship.

3. Citizenship by Investment

This is the easiest method if you have money. Most countries in the Caribbean and some parts of Europe offer citizenship to individuals who are able to invest money in their state funds, real estate, or have a local business in that country. If you can make an investment of this sort, you will be eligible to apply for citizenship even with your family. Examples of these countries are shown below.
